I’ve been using Substack Notes, and would love for you to join me there!
Notes is a new space on Substack for us to share links, short posts, quotes, photos, and more. I plan to use it for things that don’t fit in the newsletter, like work-in-progress or quick questions.
Why I’m Using Substack Notes
There’s a lot of reasons I picked Substack to be the platform to host my public non-fiction work. This is work that is dear to me, takes a lot of energy and time, and is done with a labored love I’ve not felt before.
With Substack, I own all my work and my email list. This means a lot for a creative trying to build a brand. If Substack does something I disagree with, I can leave and take my entire audience list with me. And all my work will always be right where I Ieft it.
With Twitter, Pinterest, and Meta, creatives are at the mercy of the platform. Twitter doesn’t like what I wrote? They just erase it, like I never said the words at all. Instagram didn’t like that my wife’s amazing art depicting the complexity of being a (cyst-identifying) woman because a woman’s parts were drawn beautifully to show the world - We eat from women’s tits, people. Like…This is the shit that gets banned. And it’s infuriating.
In case you missed it, here’s a great example of the fundamental differences in vision and relationships between Twitter and Substack that was in the news last week.
I have been MIA on social media for a while now. It wasn’t really a conscious decision. It was more of a high Self decision that was made for me. I just stopped getting on Facebook, then Instagram and I refuse to get on TikTok - not because I am against it, but mostly because my addict brain cannot handle those constant dopamine hits (and I’ll argue yours can’t, either, but you’re grown - do with your brain’s energy what you want!) and I need all my brain’s dopamine and energy to keep my shit together, keep writing this newsletter, and feed my creativity well (which is huuuge).
So - to Notes or not to Notes, that is the question, for you.
Join me if you wish. No worries if you’d rather abstain.
